Developing New Low Magic Spells

While your character can gain new spells as specials for a power, this is limited to times when you increase the level of the power. You might want to have new spells at times other than when you increase your power. This is called spell research.

If your character has the skill Knowledge of Magic, spell research is based on that and modified with the power the spell is being developed under. If you do not have Knowledge of Magic, then you must use the power as the basis of the research attempt, and there is a -5 detriment to the research attempt. Otherwise you create the spell as detailed above in the sections on basic, difficult, and extreme low magic.

When you attempt to research a new spell, or magical intention, you make your roll; the level of success determines how long the spell research takes. If you are studying in a magical library you will gain a +5 to your result, though you must spend at least an hour for this modifier to take effect. If you are studying in a magical laboratory you gain a +10 to your result, though you must spend an entire day in such research for this modifier to take effect. A result of 25 or more results in researching the spell or intention immediately. A result of 20 or more results in researching the spell or intention in an hour. A result of 15 or better takes a day to research the spell or intention. A result of 10 or better takes a week to research the spell or intention. A result of 5 or better takes a season to research the spell or intention. A result of 1 or better takes a year to research the spell or intention.

A magical library must have at least ten books on magic to qualify. A magical laboratory must contain a magical library and have at least a work table, tools, and all necessary charts and support material for the low magic power being used; including a place to perform an necessary rituals.
