A good deal of this information is due to the efforts of Jennifer Favia Guerra (the creator of the Darine), I hope you like what I have done with your creation...
The Darine are wanderers who must travel from place to place as a result of an ancient racial curse. The Darine have an intimate connection with the land itself that is not clearly understood.
Most Darine learn to fight with some kind of weapon. The most normal weapons to be seen are swords, daggers, clubs, and hand axes. Those few who learn to use missile weapons tend to learn the light crossbow or the sling. Many Darine learn to throw knives.
The Darine tend to form in caravans consisting of extended families. They number somewhere between 5 to 100 members per caravan. The Darine travel in large wooden wagons with high arching roofs, these wagons are called Vardos. They are painted with the clan sign and have bright colors and tinted glass. They also travel with a mixed collection of dogs, goats, and chickens. Those of the Kaldresh clan may have hawks or bears as pets. A caravan is led by the elder of the family. Their word is final in all matters related to the clan. They often arrange marriages between clans in order to gain allies or to end feuds.
While non-Darine humans (called gorgios by the Darine) may be befriended by the Darine, but they can never be considered part of the Darine fellowship. There are no "honorary" Darine. Darine trade with gorgios for everything, preferring goods, services, and even trinkets to local coinage. Having said that it is true that they love acquiring money and goods almost to the point of obsession, but they rarely do an honest day's work for it. They frequently accept promises for later services in place of immediate payment. They interpret promises literally, so care must be taken in the exact wording of bargains or deals.
The Darine believe that justice is far more important than the law. They ignore laws that they consider to be inconvenient. They do not view things as property to be owned by someone, so they do not see anything wrong with stealing. Murder is punished by killing or by a curse. Rape is punished by castration or a curse. The Darine also punish broken promises by the kidnapping of a child or spouse, who then is expected to carry out the broken promise. They have no compunction about twisting the truth to their ends. Assault carries with it a thorough beating (or a curse in extreme cases). Issues too large for a single family to decide demand a kris a court of clan elders from several families.
The Darine tend to prefer roasted meat, the milk of goats or mares, and fruit. They tend to like to drink very strong coffee.
The Darine tend to worship Zirchev above all others, they see him as being the most direct connection to the land.
Darine men wear their hair long (though some have it tied in a ponytail). They usually sport mustaches. Often finger rings and ear rings will be worn along with flashy brooches for cloaks and pendants or necklaces. Common dress for a Darine male is a combination of dark close fitting trousers and a dark colored loose fitting tunic with laces up the front beginning at mid-chest. Either a broad belt or a colorful sash is worn about the midriff. If the person has money high cuffed boots are worn. Often a scarf is worn about the neck or brow.
Darine women tend to have long hair, either loose or tied in back. They often wear finger rings, large ear rings, bracelets, necklaces, anklets, and armlets. Common dress for a Darine women is a brightly colored knee-length or calf-length skirt and a loose pull-over blouse with a rounded bodice. Women either go bare footed, wear sandals, or soft high boots.
All wear cloaks when it is cold. In winter full-length cloaks bearing hoods are worn.
