Dwarven magic is rooted deeply within their craft with metals, stone, fire, and ley lines of power. When this power is first acquired the dwarf learns to tap into ley lines (currents of astral light), to recover their power detriments. This takes a full hour to complete.
The dwarf also learns to extract the magic power inherent in stones or metal through a ritual. The dwarf begins by knowing the magical effects of one stone or metal.
The dwarf prepares for one week prior to the ritual: fasting, praying to Kagyar, and ritually bathing. Failure to do this will prevent the ritual from succeeding.
The dwarf magically cleanses the area where the ritual is to take place, along with the tools to be used. These tools are: a magic hammer to help focus the power of the ritual, a magic pendant to aid in concentration, and a magic circlet to protect from adverse influences. This step requires a successful Craft Magic roll. This step takes a half hour to complete. Failure at this stage means that you must redo the cleansing with a -1 power detriment.
The dwarf ritually gathers personal power through a series of chants and gestures. This step requires a successful Craft Magic roll with a -1 detriment. In addition to the modifying ability you may choose, you must add in the level of success from the previous step, and the magic pendant. This step takes ten minutes less one per MP. Failure means the ritual simply does not work. The detriment for power due to the failure at this point is -2.
The dwarf calls out to the spirits of Kagyar to extract the power. This step requires a successful Craft Magic roll with a -2 detriment. In addition to the modifying ability you may choose, you must add in the level of success from the previous step, and the magic pendant. This step takes ten minutes less one per MP. Failure at this stage results in a magical backlash and an end to the ritual, the result being a wound of a level of severity equal to the level of failure! Additionally, there is a -3 power detriment incurred by such failure.
The dwarf focuses internally to gain the power. This step requires a successful Craft Magic roll with a -3 detriment. In addition to the modifying ability you may choose, you must add in the level of success from the previous step, and the magic hammer. This step also takes ten minutes less one per MP. Failure at this stage results in a similar backlash as experienced by step 4, though the power detriment due to such failure at this point is -4.
The dwarf releases the magical forces and closes the ritual. This step requires a successful Craft Magic roll with a -4 detriment. In addition to the two modifying abilities you may choose, you must add in the level of success for the magic circlet. This step takes one minute. Failure at this stage results in the same sort of backlash as step five, though with a -5 power detriment. Success at this stage results in a -5 power detriment.
The dwarf also learns to imbue items with magical powers. This process takes one day per kilogram of the item per effect being paced into the item. This will never take less than a full day of work. The dwarf is first taught to make magical weapons with the effect of Magical Damage.
With the second level in this ability, the dwarf learns the properties of another stone or metal. They can make items with a Magical Armor effect.
The third level in Craft Magic brings another stone or metal. They also learn to make magic items with Protection from Magic—note that an item with this effect will count its ability score in this as a detriment to any further magical effect attempted on that item.
The fourth level in Craft Magic brings another stone or metal. They may learn a new power for magic items. They also gain the Fire Ritual, a spirit magic that allows them to call forth a fire elemental to help in making magic items.
